Prof. Okyeon Yi

Prof. Okyeon Yi received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from Korea University, Korea, in 1988 and 1990, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in mathematics from University of Kentucky, USA, in 1996. From 1999 to 2001, he was a leader of the research team for information security with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute.

Since 2001, he has been with the Faculty of Information Security, Cryptography, and Mathematics, Kookmin University, Korea.

He also served as the president of the Korea Crypto Forum from 2020 to 2021, and as the president of the Korean Society of Information Protection (KIISC) during 2022.

His research interests include Cryptography, Quantum Security, 5G, 6G, and Satellite Security.

And he held firm belief that the development of usable technologies and equipments for information security and cryptography is the most important research objective.

Achievements

Research Publications
He has published many papers on various research topics such as 5G mobile security, quantum cryptography, and cryptographic equipment.

In particular, he published research papers on radioactive decay and photon-based quantum entropy generation, evaluation, quantum random number generators techniques, and published many research papers on cryptographic technologies and equipment development with block encryption, public key encryption, and key induction based on quantum-based random numbers for IoT devices.
Promotion of research projects
Professor Okyeon Yi researched as the research director of “6G mobile communication information security technology based on 5G+“ which is a large research project supported by the Korean government from April 2020 to December 2027.

The purpose of this research project is to research and develop PQC, QCM, and QKD-based quantum security technologies for 5G and 6G mobile communication security.

Contributions to Society
  • Contribute to the development of information security and encryption technology
    • From 2007 to present, as a digital investigation advisory member of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, contributed to researching technological capabilities and securing related technologies in the field of digital forensics
    • Since 2013, served as Chairman of the Korea Cryptography Forum, Chairman of the Safety Evaluation Subcommittee, and Chairman of the Policy Subcommittee, contributing to the development and standardization of cryptographic module testing technology.
    • In 2016, developed an information security standard for the traffic signal control system wireless (LTE) modem and contributed to the establishment of the Korean standard (NPA-TSC-STANDARD-2018-04-30 (2010R16))
  • Contribute to revitalizing industry
    • Developed verified cryptographic modules (CM-112-2021.03, CM-132-2022.11, CM-192-2026.11) for smart grid on March 31, 2016, November 27, 2017, and November 18, 2021 in collaboration with Korea Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO) Power Research Institute. With the successful development, the AMI distribution project for the intelligent strategic network for 2 million households worth KRW 250 billion in 2016 and 3 million households worth KRW 300 billion in 2017 was able to resume.
    • From May 2011 to February 2015, succeeded in developing a verified encryption module for smart devices, and based on wired and wireless equipment, we used various national major facilities such as the military, National Police Agency, local governments, Korea Meteorological Administration, Cultural Heritage Administration, K-Water, and intelligent power grid. He has contributed to revitalizing the encryption technology and information security market by commercializing it through linking with existing networks.
    • Development and commercialization of real-time wireless WiFi security equipment with video/sensor information for military training grounds.
    • Development and commercialization of WiFi equipment that ensures confidentiality of temperature, humidity, and video data at major military facilities.
    • Development and commercialization of mobile video surveillance WiFi wireless equipment for innovative cities based on UTIS.
    • Development and commercialization of WiFi wireless transmission equipment for crime prevention video information for local government CCTV.
    • Development and commercialization of wired equipment for transmission of surveillance video/ observation data for water purification plants/pressurization plants.
    • Development and commercialization of LTE security equipment for transmitting power meter data for power exchange/consumer use.
    • Development and commercialization of 3G/LTE security equipment for data transmission for mobile electric vehicle chargers
    • Development of LTE-M based SSL VPN security equipment for national disaster network and commercialization through acquisition of CC certification.
    • Development and commercialization of LTE-based SSL VPN security standards and compatibility test equipment for traffic signal controllers.
    • Development and commercialization of CCTV-integrated SSL VPN (CC certification) equipment for smart cities and crime prevention.
    • Development and commercialization of Quantum Cryptographic Module since 2018.
    • Development and commercialization of 5G/LTE/VPN/Quantum cryptographic modules, encryption devices and equipment for drones for public services since 2021.
    • Development and commercialization of QKD(Quantum Key Distribution)) system with encryption devices for drones based on verified encryption modules for public services since 2022.
    • Development and commercialization of 5G/LTE/VPN/QKD/Quantum encryption devices for public CCTV networks based on verified encryption modules for public services since 2022.
